To add Bounce Protection on existing checking accounts, please call a customer service representative at (229) 336-5271.
At times, unanticipated expenses or unforeseen problems can leave customers with too little cash in their checking account. Having a check returned due to insufficient funds can be an embarrassing experience. At Planters and Citizens Bank, we want to do our part to save the customer from such an experience. That's why we offer Bounce Protection, a special overdraft privilege for P&C Bank personal checking customers.
What is Bounce Protection?
Bounce Protection is an overdraft privilege which allows overdraft items within your current available Bounce Protection limit to be paid as a non-contractual courtesy. Bounce Protection is not a loan of any kind such as a revolving line-of-credit and should not be viewed as an encouragement to overdraw your account.
How does Bounce Protection work?
As long as you maintain your account in good standing* and there are no legal orders outstanding or excessive overdrafts, P&C Bank may, at its discretion, honor overdrafts up to the Bounce Protection limit on your account. If you use Bounce Protection, you should remember the bank's normal overdraft item fee of $30 for each item will be deducted from your limit. The overdraft fee is deducted from your account for each insufficient check or debit item presented for payment from your account per day when Bounce Protection is accessed. The bank will notify you by mail when an overdraft occurs. No interest will be charged on the overdraft balance.
Bounce Protection is available in two ways: on your checking account and on your debit card. You may choose to not allow P&C Bank to authorize and pay overdrafts on your ATM and one-time debit transactions but still allow us to authorize and pay overdrafts that are the result of incoming checks. An example of this would be a parent allowing Bounce protection on their checking account, but not on their child's debit card.
*Good standing – defined as making sufficient deposits to bring your account to a positive end-of-day balance, including the payment of all bank fees and charges, at least once every 35 calendar days
How to "opt in"?
When opening a new account, you automatically opt in to Bounce Protection when your account remains in “good standing” for the first 35 days of opening the account. When ordering a debit card, a customer service representative will present you with an "Opt In" form authorizing us to pay overdrafts on your ATM and one-time debit card transactions. If Bounce Protection is desired on an existing account, you may call a P&C Bank customer service representative at (229) 336-5271 or stop by the bank.
Can I decline to have Bounce Protection on my account?
Yes. When opening a new account, you may choose to “opt out” of Bounce Protection. To remove Bounce Protection from existing accounts or debit cards, you may call a P&C Bank customer service representative at (229) 336-5271 or stop by the bank.
I have two checking accounts. Can I get Bounce Protection on both?
Yes. As long as each account meets the “good standing” requirements within the first 35 days of opening, Bounce Protection will be available on both accounts. If you would like to add Bounce Protection to an existing account, you may call a P&C Bank customer service representative at (229) 336-5271 or stop by the bank.
What if I go beyond my Bounce Protection limit?
Overdrafts above and beyond your established Bounce Protection limit may result in a check(s) being returned to the payee. The normal overdraft item fee of $30 will be charged per check and assessed to your account. P&C Bank generally pays electronic transactions first and then items in check number order per the bank’s policy. Please be aware that the order of item payment may create multiple overdraft items during a single banking day for which you will be charged our overdraft item fee of $30 for each overdraft item paid.
We may refuse to pay an overdraft item at any time even though we may have previously paid overdrafts for you. For example, we typically do not pay overdraft items if the account is not in good standing or, if based upon our review of your account management, we determine that you are using Bounce Protection excessively or seem to be using it as a regular line of credit.
What transactions are covered by Bounce Protection?
Generally, you may access your Bounce Protection through:
- Checks and other debits cashed at teller windows
- ACH debit transactions
- Recurring point-of-sale transactions
- Online Banking, BillPay or Telephone Banking
Additionally, we may authorize and cover transactions from an ATM and one-time use point-of-sale terminal transaction if you have "opted in" for Bounce Protection on your debit card. Accessing Bounce Protection through the above options will also impose overdraft item fees.
How quickly must I repay my Bounce Protection?
You must bring your account to a positive balance for a 24-hour period within 35 days. If, after a period of time, your account has not been brought to a positive balance, we will close your account and take other steps to recover our funds.
What does my Bounce Protection privilege cost?
There is no cost associated with this privilege if you bring your account to a positive balance once every 35 days. If you use Bounce Protection, please note that the amount of the overdraft plus the bank’s overdraft item fee of $30 per item will be deducted from your Bounce Protection limit.
How soon can I use my Bounce Protection?
If you are a new active account holder, you may be able to use the overdraft privilege 35 days after the account is opened, provided your account is in good standing. To receive this privilege, you must make sufficient deposits to bring the account to a positive end-of-day balance at least once during the first 35 days after opening the account, avoid excessive overdrafts, and have no legal orders, levies or liens against your account.

Bounce Protection Customer Overdraft Policy
An insufficient balance could result in several ways, such as:
- the payment of checks, electronic funds transfers, or other withdrawal requests;
- payment authorized by you;
- the return of unpaid items deposited by you;
- the imposition of bank service charges; or
- the deposit of items which, according to the bank's Funds Availability Policy, are treated as not yet available or finally paid.
We are not obligated to pay an item presented for payment if your account does not have collected funds. However, if you maintain your account in good standing (defined as making deposits and bringing your account to a positive balance for a 24-hour period at least once every 35 days) and there are no legal orders outstanding, we may, in our discretion, approve your reasonable overdrafts as a non-contractual courtesy. Normally, we will not approve an overdraft for you in excess of the pre-determined amount assigned to your account type, including our insufficient funds handling fee(s). We may refuse to pay an overdraft for you at any time, even though we may have previously paid overdrafts for you. You will be notified by mail of any non-sufficient funds items paid or returned that you may have; however, we have no obligation to notify you before we pay or return any item.
The amount of any overdraft plus our Insufficient Funds fee(s) that you owe us shall be due and payable upon demand. If no demand is made, the amount shall be due no later than 30 calendar days after the creation of the overdraft. If there is an overdraft paid by us on an account with more than one owner or agent on the signature card, each owner and agent, will be jointly and severally liable for all overdrafts inclusive of fees.
LIMITATIONS: Available to individually and jointly owned accounts in good standing for personal or household use. Planters and Citizens Bank reserves the right to limit participation to one account per household and to discontinue this product without prior notice.
